Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its action in preventing migraines. Migraines are divided into two main categories: on the one hand, migraines without aura, which are characterised by the immediate onset of headaches, often accompanied by mood disorders; and on the other hand, migraines with aura, which are characterised by sensory (facial paralysis), visual and language disorders. Migraines have an inflammatory component with the release of algogenic substances (such as prostaglandins), and an intense vasodilatation of the vessels and arteries of the brain, both of which are responsible for the pain. Feverfew allows to act on these two phenomena. Thanks to the flavonoids and parthenolide it contains, it has an anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. Parthenolide also counteracts vasodilation of the trigeminal system, the excitation of which is a driving force behind pain in migraine.
