Calcium
Description
Calcium is the most common mineral in the body, stored almost entirely (98%) in the bones, and counts for about 2% of body weight. Generally, between 20 and 30% of the calcium provided by the diet is absorbed by the digestive tract, but absorption varies according to needs, increasing in particular during growth, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Calcium is essential for the maintenance of bone health and the proper functioning of many enzymes and hormones.
The benefits
- Calcium affects energy metabolism, muscle function, blood clotting, nerve neurotransmission, digestive enzymes, cell division, bone and dental health.
- When talking about bone health, it is important to mention the important role of vitamin D in promoting the absorption of calcium and its use by the body. Indeed, studies have shown that calcium and vitamin D intakes are necessary for bones formation in the foetus and child.
