Vitamin C
Chemical name:
Ascorbic acid
Description
This vitamin is neither synthesised nor stored by the body. It must therefore be provided entirely by the diet. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 80 mg.
The main food sources of ascorbic acid are both very varied and well known: kiwi fruit (83 mg/100 g), parsley (210 mg/100 g), blackcurrants (176 mg/100 g), but also certain meats, milk, etc.
The benefits
- Vitamin C is the vitamin with the largest number of proven physiological functions.
- For example, it helps to maintain the immune system, particularly during and after physical exercise.
- It has an antioxidant function that protects cells - especially their DNA - against oxidative stress.
- Vitamin C also acts on the synthesis of collagen and is therefore involved in the formation of blood vessel walls, in the functions of bones and cartilage, and in the maintenance of good dental and skin health.
- Finally, vitamin C also contributes to a normal energy metabolism and the reduction of fatigue.
