Quercetin
Description
It is the most active of the flavonoids (which are essentially pigments, which gives it, as well as rutin which is chemically very close to it, powerful antioxidant properties). This flavonoid is present in many plants such as onions, which are an excellent source of quercetin, the highest content being in the outermost layers of the plant.
Quercetin is responsible for some of the therapeutic effects of several medicinal plants, including ginkgo and St. John's wort.
Often combined with vitamin C in supplements, quercetin improves its absorption by the body and delays its elimination. A brief historical reminder: vitamin C and flavonoids were discovered at the same time, in 1937, by Albert Szent-Györgyi, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.
The benefits
- Powerful antioxidant properties: quercetin boosts the immune system and helps fight against oxidative stress, responsible for the premature ageing of our cells;
- Cardiovascular protection: a correlation has been established between the consumption of foods rich in quercetin and the reduction of coronary disorders and strokes;
- Anti-inflammatory: the anti-inflammatory virtues of quercetin have been clinically validated.
