Vitamin B8
Chemical name:
Biotine
Description
This vitamin is synthesized by the body, but not in sufficient quantity. It must therefore be provided by the diet, especially as the body is not able to store it. The recommended daily intake of vitamin B8 for adults is 50 µg (60 µg for people over 75).
Biotin is most often found in trace amounts in animal and plant tissues. The foods that contain the most biotin are liver (130 µg/100 g) and eggs (25 µg/100 g), but it is also found in yeast, lentils and mushrooms.
The benefits
- Generally speaking, vitamin B8 acts as a coenzyme in metabolic reactions, particularly in the metabolism of macronutrients (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins). It is indirectly involved in the synthesis of lipids and in the early stages of fatty acid formation; it is also involved in the catabolism of carbohydrates and certain amino acids. This shows that biotin plays an active role in energy metabolism, i.e. in the production of the energy required by the body's cells.
- It enables the nervous system to function properly and helps maintain psychological functions.
- In addition, biotin has recognized effects in the field of dermatology as it contributes to the maintenance of mucous membranes and normal skin and hair.
